AFRICA
A Continent of Strategic Resources, Geopolitical Competition, and Transformative Potential
Africais one of the most strategically significant and diverse regions in the world, comprising 54 countriesand spanning a vast geographic area between Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific. Its proximity to key maritime routes—including the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Atlantic Ocean—places Africa at the center of global trade, energy transport, and security dynamics. At the same time, Africa is home to some of the world’s fastest-growing populations and economies, giving it increasing influence over global development trajectories.
Strategic Importance and Natural Resources
Africa holds an extraordinary share of the world’s natural resources, including critical minerals such as cobalt, lithium, rare earth elements, uranium, and vast reserves of oil and natural gas. These resources are essential for global energy systems, digital technologies, electric vehicles, and defense industries, making Africa increasingly central to the global energy transition and technological competition.
Countries in North and Sub-Saharan Africa are also becoming important energy suppliers to Europe and global markets, particularly as diversification away from authoritarian suppliers has become a strategic priority.
Security Challenges: Conflict and Terrorism
Despite its potential, Africa faces significant security challenges. Armed conflicts, political instability, and terrorismcontinue to affect large parts of the continent. The Sahel regionhas emerged as one of the world’s most fragile security zones, with extremist groups exploiting weak governance, poverty, and climate stress. Similarly, Somaliaremains affected by persistent insecurity, terrorism, and humanitarian crises.
These conflicts not only threaten regional stability but also have broader implications for migration, maritime security, and international counterterrorism efforts.
Climate Change, Migration, and Human Security
Africa is among the regions most vulnerable to climate change, despite contributing minimally to global emissions. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, desertification, and flooding are exacerbating food insecurity, displacement, and competition over scarce resources. Climate stress is increasingly linked to migration flows toward Europe and within Africa, making climate resilience a core security and development issue.
Managing migration requires integrated approaches that combine economic development, climate adaptation, governance reform, and regional cooperation.
Geopolitical Competition and Foreign Investment
Africa has become a focal point for global geopolitical competition, particularly between China, Western countries, and emerging powers. China has significantly expanded its footprint through infrastructure projects, energy investments, and trade partnerships. Western actors, including the European Union and the United States, are responding with renewed engagement focused on sustainable development, governance, and strategic partnerships.
While foreign investment presents opportunities for growth, it also raises questions about debt sustainability, transparency, sovereignty, and long-term development outcomes.
